A Chicago mother allegedly told police that “voices” in her head led her to murder her young daughter.

The Tribute reported that Lucia was later pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital. The outlet detailed that police identified the child as a 1-year-old, but prosecutors later said she was 21 months old.
PEOPLE reached out to the Chicago Police Department and the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office but did not hear back on Sunday, Jan. 5.

Vazquez also told officials that she tried to drown herself but was unable to, so she then tried to cut herself, per CBS News.
The woman later appeared in court on Saturday, Jan. 4, when prosecutors said she confessed the killing to her sister and told her not to call the police, according to documents obtained by the Tribune,
Vazquez is currently detained at the Cook County Jail. She is set to return to court on Tuesday, Jan. 7. It is not clear if she has legal representation to comment on her behalf.
