'I Know What You Did Last Summer' Reboot Teases Fisherman's Return

A villainous fisherman is returning to North Carolina.

On Wednesday, Dec. 4, Sony Pictures unveiled its first look at the upcoming reboot of its 1997 slasher classic I Know What You Did Last Summer when it shared a first-look image from the film's set to Instagramconfirming that the movie has started filming. The image showed a film slate in frame along with a long fisherman's hook that fans familiar with the series, which stars Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt, recognize as villainous fisherman Ben Willis' weapon of choice.

I Know What You Did Last Summer originally spawned two sequels released in 1998 and 2006, though no actors from the original two movies appeared in the third film. The original film starred Prinze Jr., now 48, and Hewitt, now 45, with Ryan Phillippe and Prinze's now-wife Sarah Michelle Gellar as four teenagers whose efforts to cover up a near-fatal car accident result in the man they hit ( Muse Watson) attempting to kill them.

News first broke that Sony was rebooting the series in February 2023. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson ,Do Revenge) is directing the new entry with a script from Leah McKendrick. Prinze Jr., who plays Ray Bronson throughout the series, confirmed back in July during an interview with Entertainment Tonight that he was working out a deal to reprise his role in the upcoming film.

Gellar, 47, told PEOPLE in October that she will not reprise her role as Helen Shivers in the film, pointing to the simple fact that her character dies in the original movie. However, she noted that filmmaker Robinson is a close friend and said she will play a small part in its production.

“My best friend (Jennifer Kaytin Robinson) is directing it, so we joke that I have an unofficial job, which is I am continuity,” she said. “So I'm always the one telling her, 'Well, that would happen, or that wouldn't happen with those characters,' so I do have kind of an unofficial job title.”

Gellar shared a photo to Instagram from the movie's set on Nov. 27 in which she joked that visiting I Know What You Did Last Summer will see herself and Prince Jr. eventually make a third Scooby-Doo movie together, too.

The new I Know What You Did Last Summer The movie will feature a new cast that includes Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, Jonah Haur-King, Lola Tung, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Austin Nichols and Gabbriette, in addition to Prinze Jr. and Hewitt reprising their roles. The movie is scheduled for release July 18, 2025.
