Devendra Fadnavis to be sworn in as Maharashtra CM on December 5

Ending days of speculation over Maharashtra's next Chief Minister, Governor CP Radhakrishnan on Wednesday (December 4, 2024) invited BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis and his party-led Mahayuti alliance to form the next government on Thursday (December 5, 2024). This invitation came just hours after Mr. Fadnavis, 54, was unanimously elected the Maharashtra BJP Legislature Party leader, paving the way for his swearing-in as the Chief Minister for a third time.

French lawmakers vote to oust Prime Minister in first successful no-confidence vote since 1962

France's far-right and left-wing lawmakers joined together to vote Wednesday (December 4, 2024) a no-confidence motion prompted by budget disputes that forces Prime Minister Michel Barnier to resign. President Emmanuel Macron insisted he will serve the rest of his term until 2027. However, he will need to appoint a new prime minister for the second time after July's legislative elections led to a deeply divided parliament.

Manipur probe panel gets extension till May

The three-member Commission of Inquiry (CoI) notified by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to probe the Manipur ethnic violence got another extension. It has been asked to submit its report to the Central government at the earliest, but not later than May 20, 2025.

Assam government bans public consumption of beef

The Assam government has banned the public consumption of beef with immediate effect. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said his Cabinet had taken the decision in this regard after analyzing the statements of State Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah and Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain, who “resented” the distribution of beef by political parties to influence voters in the Muslim- dominated Samaguri Assembly constituency in central Assam.

Rajya Sabha passes Boilers Bill

The Rajya Sabha, on Wednesday (December 4, 2024), passed the Boilers Bill, replacing the Boilers Act of 1923 brought by the colonial administration. Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said the Bill would ensure safety at factories where industrial boilers were used.

The Railways (Amendment) Bill, 2024, was taken up for discussion in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday (December 4, 2024). “The Bill intends to amend the Railways Act of 1989 to enhance the powers of the Railway Board and improve operational efficiencies,” Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw said.
