Sunday 3rd October – Kakadoo.

Well, the much anticipated Kakadoo was a major disappointment after Litchfield and Katherine National Parks. Granted it is the dry season so the waterfalls, wetlands and rivers are not at their best, but in our opinion it is majorly overrated. We first visited an Aboriginal Rock Art site at Nourlangie. I tried to convince Dave of the cultural and historical significance of the paintings, but he's adamant that a couple of infantile crayon doodles do not make a Rock Art site. Indeed, Elle's artwork should solicit far more oohs and aahs than this rubbish (It did provide the comic opportunity for me to call them Kakadoo-dles, though).

Next stop was the Mamukala wetlands and Bird Hide. Bill Oddie would probably be impressed as there were thousands of egrets, pygmy geese, herons, etc. Maybe the heat is just getting to us because after 5 minutes dealing with the overpowering stench of bird poo, we decided to move on.

We drove along the Arnhem Highway. Poor Junior had to run on fumes as petrol stops are fairly scarce when it's this remote. We decided to turn off the aircon to conserve fuel so we've both sweated

off about 4 stone. Good old Junior coughed and spluttered his way to the next fuel service station and we both breathed a sigh of relief that we didn't break down in the middle of Kakdoo.

On the Arnhem Highway, we drove through the infamous Humpty Doo (but Dave blinked and he missed it and there was no sign of feral Cheryl!).

After Kakadoo we headed to Berry Springs to stay at Tumbling Waters Park. Now this is more like it. It's a really nice camp site with an open air deckchair cinema, a croc feeding pool, its own billabong and a healthy stock of cold beers at reasonable prices.

In all, Kakadoo has been the most disappointing part of the trip so far, which has led to the nickname Kaka-don't!!
